New Age of Discovery was a spectacular promenade event commissioned by Snibston Discovery Park in 2012 as the culmination of their Transform art commissioning programme. Working with a range of performance artists, the whole site staff, Steampunk communities and a team of volunteers, New Age of Discovery transported Snibston to the year 2100 where oil as a source of fuel has become a luxury and steam power is the fuel of choice.
The performance equated the closure of the coal mines in the 1980s with the threat of closure of museums and galleries in the current recessionary climate.
New Age of Discovery culminated in a spectacular coup de theatre during the final, uplifting speech, when the giant video screen was disrupted by a real locomotive bursting through it, recalling the public reaction to the Lumiere brothers’ Arrival of a Train at la Ciotat Station.
Owing to popular demand, a revised version of New Age of Discovery will be performed in late Autumn 2013.
